This week, we dive into Helen’s 2nd pick: Lars and the Real Girl! A film about a guy who has a sex doll as a girlfriend?! And that guy is played by Ryan Gosling?? And this is one of Helen’s favorite films ever?? Hear our takes to find out why.
Synopsis for Lars and the Real Girl
Extremely shy Lars (Ryan Gosling) finds it impossible to make friends or socialize. His brother (Paul Schneider) and sister-in-law (Emily Mortimer) worry about him, so when he announces that he has a girlfriend he met on the Internet, they are overjoyed. But Lars’ new lady is a life-size plastic woman. On the advice of a doctor (Patricia Clarkson), his family and the rest of the community go along with his delusion.
Anthony: Okay, so this is one of the major movies you selected for your watchlist. I’m excited to hear your opinion on this rewatch because I’m assuming you’ve watched this movie multiple times?
Helen: Yes, I’ve seen it many times. I saw it in the theater when it was new. It may be the only good movie I’ve ever seen on my birthday because I tend to go to movies on my birthday, and I have a terrible track-record of choosing just clunker, flop, bad, embarrassing movies. And this is one that had a huge effect, and that I loved, and that I’ve loved ever since. And owned on DVD until I lost it. I was upset to discover that it was gone when I tried to bring it today to watch it. But it’s one that I’ve seen many, many times, and it’s one that still holds up no matter how many times I watch it.
Anthony: That’s awesome. I’m glad you lost the DVD because I liked seeing it in high-definition. The HD was really nice…
